Overheard a neighbor say mulch is overrated and it got me thinking
She said she ripped out all her mulch beds and just put in clover and creeping thyme instead, said it costs her $0 after the first season. Has anyone else tried ditching mulch for a living ground cover, or am I just being cheap about my front yard refresh?

$0 after the first season" is exactly the kind of thing that sounds too good to be true until you actually try it. I've noticed this weird pattern where people get stuck in a loop of buying the same stuff every year just because that's what their parents did. Like my neighbor still pays for lawn fertilizer even though his grass looks exactly the same as mine that gets nothing but dog pee. The real trick isn't even about clover vs mulch, it's about breaking out of that default habit of buying something just because it's what you're "supposed" to do.

Push back a little here @andrewh95 because I think you're oversimplifying it. Not all those yearly purchases are just dumb habits - some people actually need that stuff for specific soil types or pest issues. My neighbor's lawn was a disaster until he got a soil test and realized he needed lime every spring. Yeah there's definitely a trap in buying the same junk your parents bought, but acting like every recurring cost is pointless is just trading one assumption for another. The real trick is knowing your own lawn's needs instead of copying someone else's shortcut or ignoring problems until they get expensive.
