Front door was faded after just 2 years. One coat of spar urethane fixed it for $12.
I painted my front door a nice deep navy blue two summers ago. By last spring the sun had turned it grayish and patchy looking. I asked a painter friend what to do and he said just wipe it down and brush on a clear coat of outdoor spar urethane. It brought back the rich color almost instantly and cost me $12 and maybe an hour of my time. Has anyone else tried this trick on painted exterior stuff like trim or shutters?

Time to see if I can screw up my door worse than my DIY haircut" - man I felt that in my soul 😂 But on a serious note @robinson.matthew the REAL trick nobody talks about is you gotta make SURE the surface is clean before you brush that spar urethane on. Like degrease it with TSP or mineral spirits first because if you skip that step you'll just seal in all the dirt and grime and it'll look worse than faded. I did this on my garage door trim last year and the key is also applying it THIN coats. Two thin coats beats one thick gloppy mess every time. Also spar urethane dries slower so don't panic if it looks milky at first, it'll clear up as it cures. Saved my navy door too and it's STILL looking deep and rich after a whole year of brutal southwest sun.
