The day I realized I was over-tightening everything
I spent about 6 years cussing at my deck screws for stripping out, thinking the wood was just too soft. Then my buddy Bill came over to help me hang a gate and watched me set my drill clutch. He asked if I knew the 2 setting was for drywall and I felt like an absolute fool. How many of you guys ever found out you were just using the wrong tool setting for years?

Funny thing is, over-tightening can mess with the actual strength of the joint too, not just strip the screw. Turns out when you crank stuff down that hard, you're crushing the wood fibers and losing grip over time. My old man used to say "tight's tight, too tight's broke" and I thought he was just being dramatic. Now I see he meant the wood itself can fail if you muscle it too much. Sometimes snug is better than torqued to hell.

Oh man, that's a painful realization. I did the same thing with my impact driver for way too long.
