Rant: I've been patching drywall wrong for 5 years

Finally figured out why my patches kept cracking after a few weeks. Turns out you're supposed to feather the compound way past the hole, not just slap it on and call it done. My neighbor Dave watched me do it and literally laughed, then showed me his method that's lasted 3 years without a crack. Anybody else have a 'wait I've been doing this stupid this whole time' moment?

Waited way too long to learn that drywall lesson myself. My first attempt at patching a hole looked like a pancake with a crack in the middle after two weeks. Watched a few YouTube videos and felt like an idiot when I realized I was basically just filling the hole and nothing else. That feathering trick is the real deal, makes all the difference in the world.

Oh man, I feel this deep in my soul... I spent a whole weekend mudding a closet once and it all cracked after a month, so I just put a painting over it. My dad came over and showed me the right way, but honestly I'm still too lazy to do it right most of the time.
