My uncle swore toothpaste fills nail holes better than spackle

Tried his trick on a living room wall and it cracked out after three days. Anyone else have a "home remedy" that just made more work for you?

wait wait wait... your uncle actually said TOOTHPASTE? like what kind of toothpaste? the white paste kind or the gel kind? because i've heard of people using toothpaste for tiny dents in cheap hollow doors but for a whole living room wall? that's wild. i had a buddy who tried using mashed potatoes to patch a hole in his drywall because his grandpa swore by it and the potatoes just rotted and stank up the room after a week. at least toothpaste probably smelled minty while it cracked.

@stella_roberts the white paste kind and yeah it cracked but smelled fresh while doing it.
