The washing machine drum tilted and I think I can fix it myself
My 8 year old Samsung top loader started making this awful grinding noise last week and now the drum sits crooked when it spins. I pulled the front panel off and saw a broken suspension spring on the left side, which seems like a simple swap if I can find the right part online before shipping kills the deal. Has anyone replaced one of these springs before or should I just look for a used machine instead?

Ive swapped those springs on Samsung top loaders a few times. The part is usually under $15 on eBay but shipping can double it, so check Amazon or a local appliance parts store first. Just watch the tension when you unhook the new one - they can snap back hard. If the drum itself isnt dented or the shaft bent, youre probably good to go with just the spring.

Yeah I actually read somewhere that those Samsung top loaders from around 2018-2020 have a known issue with the counterweight springs wearing out faster than they should. Something about the metal composition being different than older models. A guy on a repair forum said he replaced three in one year on the same machine before he figured out it was a design flaw. So if yours is from that batch dont be surprised if it happens again down the road. And yeah definitely watch your fingers with that tension, Ive heard stories of people getting whacked good. A pair of needle nose pliers makes hooking the new one way safer.
