Rolled the dice on a $15 soldering iron from Harbor Freight...
My lamp flex broke right at the base and I figured I'd either fix it or junk it, so I grabbed that cheapo iron on a whim. It actually held enough heat to sweat the joint clean and I got the wire reconnected in about 8 minutes flat. Has anyone else gotten decent results out of a tool you were sure would be garbage?

That Harbor Freight iron surprised me too. I think the cheap ones just take a minute to heat up but once they're hot they're fine.
