My dad's old hand plane from the 1950s shaves wood better than my $80 new one

I was helping clean out my dad's garage last month and found a beat up Stanley hand plane from the 1950s. Figured it was junk but he told me to take it. Spent an afternoon flattening the sole and sharpening the iron, and man it cuts like butter. My 3 year old modern plane from the hardware store can't touch it. Anybody else find old tools that work better than new stuff?

It's wonderful when you find something solid like that. Old Stanley planes really were built to last and work better than most of what you can buy today.

Oh man that is SO true about the old Stanley planes! @betty_stone2 my grandpa had one that he used for like 40 years and it still cut smoother than anything new. I swear they put more care into making tools back then even if the handles got a bit rough over time.
