Our home inspector totally missed a huge crack in the foundation

We were doing the final walkthrough in the basement of the house in Springfield, and I saw a thin crack running up the wall behind the water heater. The inspector's report said the foundation was 'sound', but this looked bad. We hired a structural engineer for $500 and he said it was active settling, which got us a $15,000 credit from the seller. Has anyone else had an inspector miss something major like that?

Saw a news story last year about a couple who sued their inspector for missing black mold. It turned into a whole legal mess because the inspection contract limited his liability to the fee he charged. Makes you wonder what the point of hiring them even is sometimes. Good on you for getting that engineer out there, that credit is a lifesaver.

That's a scary miss, but it makes you question the whole inspection process, doesn't it? Like @viola171 pointed out, their contracts often protect them more than you. Maybe we should all be taking pictures of the exact spots they check and the tools they use. Are they even looking in the right places with the right gear, or just doing a quick walk?
