My inspector found a crack in the foundation I almost ignored

I thought it was just a normal settling crack, but he showed me how it was wider at the top than the bottom, which can mean trouble. He recommended a structural engineer for $500, and that report saved me from a huge mistake. Has anyone else gotten a specific inspection that uncovered a major issue?

Tell me about it, I once saw a crack like that and thought it was just bad caulk work. @aaronrobinson is right, that shape is a total giveaway something's shifting. My buddy ignored a similar report and now his patio looks like a skateboard ramp. That engineer's fee is basically a down payment on saving your whole house.

Good call getting that engineer out. Those vertical cracks with a taper are classic red flags for differential settlement. That 500 bucks probably saved you tens of thousands in future repairs.
