Going against the grain: We bought a house without worrying about school zones

Most people say to always pick a home in a good school district... but we don't have kids and it saved us a lot of money. We got more space in a quiet area that fits our life better right now.

In Springfield, we bought a fixer-upper three streets away from the low-rated elementary school. We saved almost $100k compared to similar homes in the good district! Now we have a big backyard for our dogs, not kids. I laugh when friends worry about test scores while we're planning a hot tub. Not paying for school buzz lets us travel more. It's the best choice for us right now!

Met a couple last year who bought a place near the train tracks because they loved the industrial vibe. Everyone told them the noise would drive them crazy and hurt the home's value. They ignored all that and just went for it. Now they say the rumble of trains at night feels like a lullaby, something they actually miss when they travel. They even built a home gym in the garage since the area was already kind of loud. Makes you wonder how many rules we follow without even questioning if they fit our lives.
