My kombucha scoby grew a weird second layer that looked like a jellyfish

I was reading an old library book about fermentation and found out that a really thick, rubbery scoby is often called a 'mother' and the new thin layer is the 'baby'. The book said you can peel them apart and give the baby to a friend. I tried it and the baby layer tore like wet paper, leaving me with two weird blobs. Has anyone else tried splitting a scoby from a really sweet batch?

That book lied about the wet paper baby.
