My kimchi exploded all over the kitchen last Wednesday

I had a 5 gallon batch of kimchi fermenting in a crock on my counter and the lid popped off at 2 AM, spraying brine all over my cabinets and floor. The smell of fish sauce and gochugaru hung in the air for DAYS no matter how much I scrubbed. Has anyone else had a fermentation bomb go off like this or am I just cursed?

Five gallons is an insane amount of kimchi to have just sitting out.

Have you never had a batch of sauerkraut erupt on you before? I used to think big crocks of fermented stuff were no big deal, but this story makes me rethink leaving anything larger than a quart jar out.
