My $45 starter kit was a total waste of money
I bought this fancy fermentation kit from a local kitchen store in Denver for 45 bucks, thinking it would make my first sauerkraut batch foolproof. Turns out the glass weights were way too small and let air in, so the whole thing got moldy after a week. I ended up tossing the cabbage and starting over with just a regular mason jar and a ziplock bag of brine, which worked perfectly. Anyone else fall for those overpriced starter kits?

Ugh @williamd70 is totally right, simple stuff always works best.

Happens all the time with kitchen gadgets. People think spending more money means better results but really it just means more marketing. The best tools are usually the simplest ones that people have used for generations. Mason jars, ziplock bags, and a little patience beat any fancy kit every time.
