Worst week of fence building I ever had - three days of rain and a broken auger

Last spring I had this job out near Springfield where the ground was nothing but clay and rocks. First day the auger bit snapped right off at 8am, and I spent 4 hours driving to the rental place for a replacement. Then it rained solid for two days straight and the whole site turned into a mud pit. By Friday I was knee deep in sludge trying to set posts that kept sinking crooked. Anyone else ever have a job that just fought you every step of the way?

Are you sure it was the job fighting you or did you just not pick the right tools for the ground conditions? Clay and rocks need a different approach than renting a standard auger.

A buddy of mine rented a compact track loader to clean up his property after some storms. He didn't think about the thick layer of clay underneath the topsoil and spent a whole weekend just getting stuck every few feet. Had to call a tow truck twice.
