Tried setting posts with gravel instead of concrete on a job in Phoenix last week
I had a customer who wanted a 200ft run of chain link done quick and cheap. He insisted on using crushed gravel tamped down instead of concrete for the corner posts. I figured it would be wobbly garbage but I gave it a shot to shut him up. Three days later the gate post shifted about 2 inches in the heat and the whole thing sagged. Has anyone else had a customer push a weird method that just flat out failed?

Ngl, gravel works fine if you actually pack it right and use enough.

... my dad used to swear by a mix of gravel and crushed asphalt for his driveway. He'd spend all weekend with a tamper, packing it down layer by layer. Neighbor tried the same thing but just dumped it in loose, looked like a moonscape after one rainstorm. Funny how the prep work makes all the difference, just like with anything really.
