Switched from hand digging to an auger after 12 hours on one post hole last summer in Alabama.

Used to think my granddad's way with a clamshell digger was good enough, but after hitting solid clay on a 6-foot privacy job I rented a one-man auger from Home Depot for $60 and finished the whole line in under 3 hours - has anyone else had that 'why didn't I do this sooner' moment with a specific tool?

My buddy Marcus tried to dig fence posts with a shovel in Georgia red clay last May. After four hours he had one hole and a blistered hand so bad he couldn't grip a beer. He rented a gas auger the next morning and had all twelve posts in by lunch.

My neighbor borrowed mine last spring and said it felt like cheating...
