Showerthought: I saw a cedar fence go from gray to green in under a year because the homeowner insisted on no sealant.

Installed it for a client in a damp, shaded part of Seattle. The constant moisture and lack of any protective coating just let algae and moss take over completely. What's the fastest you've seen a material degrade when someone skipped a basic step?

Installed a pressure treated deck for a guy who refused to let it dry before sealing. He slapped a thick coat of that rubbery sealant on it the same day. Trapped all the moisture inside. The whole thing was a warped, moldy mess in about four months. I had to go back and replace half the boards. Sometimes the "basic step" is just waiting.

Oh man, this is everywhere! It's like people get so focused on finishing the project that they skip the boring but important parts that make it last. I see it with cooking all the time, rushing to get a meal on the table and not letting meat rest or dough proof. That hurry-up attitude just guarantees you'll have to do the whole thing over again way sooner.
