Had to pick between a gas auger and a manual one for a rocky job site. Went with gas and regretted it 20 minutes in.

Was working a fence line outside of Austin last month and the ground was solid caliche. I figured the gas auger would chew through it faster but man that thing just bounced and kicked my arms off for an hour. Swapped to the manual one with a sharp blade and honestly got further in half the time. You just feel the ground better I guess. Anyone else find gas augers useless on hard packed rocky soil?

Buddy of mine snapped a gas auger shaft on a rock near El Paso.

Bet that rock put up a better fight than the auger did. Should've called it a day after the first couple inches of solid rock, but we all know how it goes when you're already out there and committed. Now he's got a nice new paperweight and a story about how the desert fights back. Hope he brought a backup plan or at least a shovel. Rocks don't care about your timeline.
