Finally tried the post hole digger from Lowes I was so skeptical about
I usually stick with my old heavy duty King digger but a guy on a job in Phoenix swore by this $50 Steelville model. Snapped my handle on a rocky patch near Bell Road and grabbed one on a whim. Three days of digging later and that cheap thing has outlasted my last two name brand ones. Anybody else had luck with a budget tool that surprised them?

Wonder if they're using the same steel supplier now as the old brands used to.

Man that's actually a really sharp question most people are missing. I'd bet money it's not the same suppliers because the old brands had decades of relationships built up with specific mills, and those mills knew the exact specs they wanted. New companies usually start with whoever gives them the best price right now, not the best long term consistency. Plus the old steel was often made with different alloys and rolling processes that aren't common anymore. So even if they went back to the same supplier the steel itself would probably come from a different furnace and be processed different. It's like putting new wine in old bottles, looks the same from outside but the quality is totally different.
