A power auger cut our post hole time in half.
Hand digging was slow and tiring. This tool saves backs and hours.

Rented one for a fence project last fall and it was a game changer, even with some clay. @shanerodriguez is right that it can get messy, so I only ran it when the ground was a bit wet from rain the night before. That kept the clay from sticking as much and the holes were pretty clean. Still had to scoop out the loose dirt but it beat swinging a clamshell digger all day.

Ugh, I have to disagree completely. That power auger clay around here and it just makes a giant sloppy mess. You still have to move all that dirt by hand anyway. Half the time you're fighting to keep it straight or it gets jammed on a root. Feels like you save zero time when you count the cleanup. Honestly, sometimes just digging it old school is less work.

I get where you're coming from with the "giant sloppy mess" thing but I actually had a totally different experience with it. Maybe it's just the clay we have around here but I ran mine when it was a bit damp and it came out way cleaner than hand digging. Plus with all the roots I hit, the auger just chewed through them while I wouldve been stuck with a shovel for an hour.
