Unpopular opinion: my old 'design process' was just staring at a blank mannequin for 3 hours in my Brooklyn apartment.

Now I force myself to start by draping with whatever's on my cutting table, even if it's just a weird scrap of orange vinyl from a failed bag project, which is how I accidentally made my best jacket yet.

Sounds like you're overthinking the whole process. Just call it messing around with fabric until something works. The best stuff happens when you stop trying so hard.

Oh man, that is so true. My friend was trying to make this perfect quilted jacket for weeks and kept ripping seams. She finally gave up, threw some scrap denim and an old flannel together just to use them up, and now it's the coolest, most worn thing in her closet. She wasn't trying at all, just playing.
