Stop using synthetic fabrics for summer wear - here's why

I keep seeing people pushing polyester blends for summer clothes and it drives me crazy. Last July I walked 12 miles on my route in Texas wearing a 100% cotton shirt and was fine. Next day I tried a fancy athletic shirt my buddy swore by and felt like I was wearing a trash bag. Synthetic fabric traps heat and doesn't breathe no matter what the tag says. I've tested both over 3 summers now and cotton wins every time. Has anyone else noticed this or am I the only one sweating through these claims?

That fancy shirt just turned you into a sweaty baked potato.

The "sweaty baked potato" comment got me. That's exactly what happened to a buddy of mine. He bought a whole set of those high-tech moisture wicking shirts for a hiking trip in Arizona and by the second day he was texting me from the trail asking if I could bring him one of my old cotton tees from the car. He said he felt like someone wrapped his torso in a wet Ziploc bag and left it in the sun. Cotton saved his whole trip.
