I finally got a dress form that actually fits me

Honestly, I spent about $80 on a cheap adjustable dress form from a craft store in Portland last month. It was way too flimsy and nothing held still when I tried to pin fabric on it. So I caved and bought a nicer one for $200 from a specialty shop near downtown. The difference is night and day - my skirt pieces actually hang right now instead of sagging weird. Has anyone else wasted cash on a form that just didn't work for their body type?

Seconded wasting money on the cheap ones. I tried a $60 one from Joann's and the base kept wobbling so bad I almost knocked it over twice with a heavy coat I was trying to fit. Ended up grabbing a used professional one off Craigslist for $150 and it changed everything. The stability alone made draping way less frustrating for me. Sometimes you just gotta pay a bit more to avoid wanting to throw your project across the room.

The cheap adjustable ones are such a gamble, sometimes you get lucky and sometimes they're basically a wire hanger with foam. I had one that kept collapsing at the waist no matter how much I tightened the dials (so frustrating for draping). Shelling out for the quality build really does save your sanity in the long run when you're trying to get proper garment shapes.
