Appreciation post: that conversation with my mom about fabric choice

I was complaining to my mom about a dress design I've been stuck on for weeks, the fabric kept bunching funny around the waist. She said "maybe you're picking the wrong weight, try something with more drape instead of the stiff cotton." I swapped to a soft rayon blend and it hung perfectly on the second try. She's not a designer, just someone who sewed her own curtains 30 years ago, but that little tip changed how I think about choosing materials now. Anyone else get good design advice from someone totally unexpected?

My curtain wisdom is more like 'maybe don't buy the cheap ones' learned the hard way.
