My old rounding hammer head flew off mid-swing on a big Percheron last Tuesday, so I wrapped the handle in soaked rawhide overnight to get through the rest of the week.
It held up for the last three horses, but what's a better quick fix for a loose head when you're miles from the shop?

Soaked rawhide's a solid temp fix. Could also try driving a thin metal shim or a couple of soaked wooden wedges in there next time.

Honestly, I always thought wedges were a bit old school and would split the wood. But I tried the soaked wooden wedge trick on a loose chair leg last month and it's still tight. The wood swells up just enough without causing damage.
