Broke a hoof knife on a Thursday and had to improvise
I was out at a barn near Lexington last week, and my favorite hoof knife snapped right at the tang while I was trimming a tough draft hoof. Ended up using a dull rasp and a pick to finish the job, took twice as long. Anyone else carry a backup knife for days like that?

Wait, you snapped a hoof knife at the tang on a draft hoof? That's wild, I've only ever seen that happen on old rusted out tools.

Oh man, I've been there with a thick draft hoof, it's like trying to carve a rock. What finally worked for me was going super slow and using a rasp to take off a good chunk of the horn first, that way the knife isn't fighting the whole thing at once.
