He bypassed a broken spring on the agitator by looping a heavy-duty zip tie through the mechanism and wedging a dime in the gear to keep tension, which got it running for the rest of the event.

Did the dime stay in the gear the whole time?

What if the dime was never in the gear to begin with? The whole trick could rely on making you think it was, while it was actually palmed or dropped somewhere else. That misdirection is way more likely than a coin surviving all that metal grinding.
