Shoutout to my granddad's dumb pipe wrench trick

My granddad always told me to wrap a zip tie around the handle of my pipe wrench as a depth stop. I thought he was nuts for years. Then I was stuck under a sink in Des Moines last fall trying to tighten a stubborn nut without crushing the soft copper line. One zip tie later and I hit the exact depth every time. Has anyone else gotten advice from an older relative that turned out to be gold?

Read an old plumber's forum that swore by using a ziptie as a depth stop.

Saw a guy on youtube do this exact thing with a drywall screw and a ziptie for drilling into tile. @eva_hayes it makes sense because the ziptie gives you a hard stop without scratching up the surface, plus its cheap if you need to swap depths mid-job. Just clip the tail flush with the bit and youre good to go, no special tools needed.
