Question about sharpening vs. replacing lawn mower blades

I spent 2 hours sharpening my old mower blade with a file last weekend, but my neighbor just swaps his out for $15 new ones at the hardware store. His cut looks better and he's done in 10 minutes. Am I wasting my time with the file or is there something I'm missing?

A hard blade edge leaves a much cleaner cut on dense grass.

Yeah, a file is fine. You just gotta get the angle right though.
