My uncle fixed my sewing machine with a ziptie

I was complaining about a loose tension dial on my old Singer and my uncle grabbed a ziptie from his truck. He wrapped it around the knob shaft to shim it tight, and it's worked perfect for three months now. Has anyone else used zipties on stuff they're not meant for?

Zipties are basically the universal quick fix. I used one to hold my car's bumper on for two years before I finally replaced it.
