My neighbor pointed out I was cleaning my vacuum wrong for years

I always rinsed the HEPA filter under the faucet and let it dry on the counter. My neighbor saw me doing it and said that ruins the fibers over time. He told me to just tap it outside against the trash can instead. Been doing that for 6 months now and the suction hasn't dropped off like it used to. Anyone else get basic maintenance advice from a neighbor that turned out to be right?

Ngl that's a solid tip, I learned the hard way too. I used to rinse my Dyson filter under the tap for years until a buddy told me the same thing about the fibers getting wrecked. Honestly now I just bang it on the porch step and the vacuum works way better than it ever did after a water rinse.

Wait you used to rinse it? Under the tap? For years? That's crazy. I thought everyone knew water kills the filter fibers. I've only ever tapped mine out against the wall. Never even thought to get it wet. Guess I'm lucky I saw a video about it early on. You must have been getting that musty smell for ages.
