My cordless drill battery died halfway through building a deck in my backyard

I was putting up the last railing on my deck in Denver when the battery just quit, and I didn't have a spare. I ended up using an old 18v charger from a different brand, holding the contacts in place with a rubber band for about 20 minutes to get enough juice to finish. It felt janky but it worked. Has anyone else had to do a weird emergency charge like that?

My neighbor once used jumper cables on a drill battery.

Seems like a risky move to me. Drill batteries are not meant for that kind of sudden high current draw. You could easily ruin the battery's cells or cause it to overheat. I've seen a small lithium battery puff up and smoke from a simple short circuit. Connecting jumper cables just asks for trouble.
