Just realized my vacuum was losing power because of a stupid filter I forgot about

I was ranting to my buddy about how my vacuum felt weaker after 6 months, and he asked when I last cleaned the filter. I stared at him blankly. Turns out the manual says to rinse it every 3 months - I never even looked at the dang thing. Pulled it out and it was caked with dust so thick it looked like a felt pad. Rinsed it, let it dry overnight, and the suction came back like it was brand new. Has anyone else missed simple maintenance stuff that makes a huge difference?

Rinsed mine out after 8 months and the water came out dark brown for a solid minute. Did you notice any weird smell coming from the vacuum before you cleaned it? I had this musty odor I couldn't figure out until I saw the gunk in the filter.
