Hit 500 vacuum bags changed this month, never thought I'd keep count

I started tracking how many vacuum bags I go through about 3 years ago when I got a new canister vac for the house. It was just a little habit to see how often I was cleaning, but this month I hit number 500. That's way more than I expected, especially since I only have 2 rooms with thick carpet. Turns out, I've been overusing my vacuum because the bags fill up faster when the filter gets clogged. I started cleaning the pre-motor filter every 10 bags and noticed the bags last almost twice as long now. Has anyone else tried spacing out bag changes by maintaining the filters better?

Actually that filter cleaning point is spot on but here's something nobody brings up. I started weighing my vacuum bags on a kitchen scale before I toss them. Sounds weird but hear me out. A bag that's "full" can actually have way less dust in it if the dirt is fluffy versus compact. I found out I was changing bags way too early because they looked full but only weighed half of what they could hold. Once I started going by weight instead of looks I stretched my bags to almost triple the life. You might wanna try that since you're already keeping count. Have you ever checked how much your bags actually weigh when you think they're done?

Wow that's genius actually. I've been throwing bags away by feel this whole time like a total chump.
