Had a real fight with my old shop vac over a $15 filter vs. a $2 pantyhose hack.
The filter for my 12-gallon vac clogged up again after cleaning my garage last week, and a new one was 15 bucks at the hardware store. I saw a tip online to use a cheap pair of pantyhose stretched over the filter cage instead. Tried it, and honestly, it catches all the fine dust just as well and you can just shake it out. Anyone else done this, or is it a dumb idea that'll wreck my motor?

That "pantyhose over the filter cage" trick is actually pretty solid. I read a whole forum thread from woodworkers who swear by it for fine sawdust. The key thing they said was to make sure the motor doesn't overheat, so you gotta check that the hose isn't getting sucked in and blocking the air. As long as air can still move, you're probably fine.

Reminds me of using old tights for window screens.
