Shoutout to the old timer at the supply house in Tacoma
I was picking up a new hoist motor and mentioned I was having trouble with a tricky governor adjustment on a 90s Otis. He drew a quick diagram on a napkin showing the exact contact point for the feeler gauge. That one tip saved me a whole afternoon of callbacks. What's the best piece of field advice you've ever gotten from another mechanic?

Those old timer tips can be a real trap though. You get a napkin sketch that works once, but it doesn't teach you why. Next time the model is different and you're lost. I've seen guys rely on tricks and never learn to read the actual manual or wiring diagram. It creates lazy mechanics who can't troubleshoot from the ground up. Real skill comes from understanding the system, not just copying a shortcut.

Wow, you just changed my whole view on this! I used to love those quick tricks, but you're right that they fall apart fast. Now I see how real skill comes from digging into the actual diagrams.
