Shoutout to the elevator at the old Post Office building in Cincinnati

I was doing a service call there last Tuesday and noticed the original 1920s Otis machine room still has the old hand crank emergency brake. The building manager said they never replaced it because it still works perfect. Has anyone else run into old gear that just won't die?

Honestly it's just an emergency brake, not that profound.

Right? I always thought the same thing. My car has that button you push down and I was sitting in the parking lot one day and just pushed it to see what would happen and it was literally just me pulling up on the regular brake lever but with my thumb. My cousin had a fit when I told him I never used it and he said I was going to wreck my transmission or something. I still forget it exists half the time. It's just a fancy way to stop rolling backwards on a hill, not some secret driving technique.
