Lube job gone wrong on a MRL elevator last Tuesday
I was doing routine guide rail lubrication on a Schindler 3300 machine room-less setup over at the St. Mary's hospital annex and the oiler nozzle slipped off the rail. Now there's a thin film of oil all over the governor rope and I'm worried about it losing traction. Has anyone dealt with cleaning oil off a steel governor cable without having to replace the whole thing?

Four ounces of oil on a governor rope? Sounds like you just built a slip-n-slide for the safety gear (super fun until someone gets hurt). I'd grab some brake cleaner and a rag, but be careful, that stuff eats paint and plastic like a hungry teenager. Honestly, you might be better off just wiping it down with isopropyl alcohol and letting it dry, then crossing your fingers the traction isn't shot. If that cable still feels greasy to the touch after, you're probably looking at a replacement anyway (ask me how I know, hah).
