After months of noise, I finally quieted down a gearbox with a shim
This gearbox in an old building's elevator has been buzzing for ages. I read online about using shims to adjust alignment, so I gave it a shot. Put in a thin one, and the sound just stopped. I mean, idk why I didn't try it sooner. Stuff like this makes the grind worth it, you know?

Nice. I would have taken the whole thing apart, put it back wrong, and then just lived with the buzzing for another year. Some of us are just built to make easy jobs hard.

My friend Dave tried to fix a loose door handle last month. He took the whole door off its hinges and then had to pay someone to rehang it. I guess some folks are just meant to make simple things hard.
