My grandma's take on short circuits had me in stitches
She thought it was a literal short cut.

Actually, that's funny but I always saw short circuits as more of a break in the path... like when the current goes the wrong way. It's not a shortcut but a fault in the wires, which can cause sparks or even fires. The term means the electricity finds a shorter path to ground, but it's dangerous and not helpful at all. So while the mix-up is cute, the real thing is very different.

But how often do short circuits actually lead to fires in everyday stuff? I've seen phone chargers spark when the cord is frayed. Or that time my friend's laptop battery swelled up and smoked. It seems like modern devices have safeguards, but they still fail. Guess it's not so cute when your toaster tries to burn the house down. Is there a way to spot these faults before they go wrong?
