Why does nobody talk about AFCI breakers tripping from vacuums?
I was reading the 2023 code book last night and found out that over 60% of nuisance tripping on AFCI breakers comes from appliances with universal motors like shop vacs and hair dryers. I had a job in Phoenix last month where a homeowner called me back three times because his living room lights kept cutting out. Turns out his kid was plugging a cheap vacuum into the same circuit. But the code says we gotta install them in bedrooms and living rooms. Do you guys replace them with regular breakers on the sly or just explain to customers that their appliance is the problem? I'm torn between following code and not making people mad.

Are you saying most guys are just swapping them out for standard breakers and crossing their fingers? Because that feels like asking for trouble down the line when the inspector rolls through or you sell the house. I get the impulse though, especially when you've got a homeowner breathing down your neck about a vacuum tripping the lights every Tuesday. But here's the thing - if you just put in a regular breaker and something bad happens, that's on you legally and morally, not the code book. I'd rather spend 20 minutes explaining the science behind universal motors and how they create that arc fault signature than risk a callback from the fire marshal.

Wait, hold up. You're telling me you actually break down the arc fault thing with motor loads to homeowners? That blows my mind. Most guys I know just grumble and swap it for a standard breaker behind the panel cover and call it a day. I've literally watched a guy do that with a Shop-Vac circuit, and when I asked about it he just said "the vacuum's old, it'll be fine." No shame, no hesitation. You must have the patience of a saint because I can barely get my guys to explain it to each other, let alone a customer who's already annoyed their lights keep going out. How long does that conversation usually take before they actually get it?
