Watching a guy get lit up on a 277v lighting circuit in a Phoenix warehouse changed my whole approach

We were retrofitting some old high bays in this massive distribution center last summer. The foreman told us the panel was dead, but this apprentice, maybe 22, didn't lock it out and just went for it. I saw the flash from across the room before I heard the bang. He got thrown back about three feet, luckily just got a bad burn on his hand. The sound of that arc is something you don't forget. Now I physically test every single conductor myself with my own meter, no matter who says it's safe. How many of you have seen something like that make a guy change his habits for good?

You say you never trust a dead panel again, but that seems a bit extreme. Most guys lockout-tagout properly and nothing happens. It sounds like that one time just got in your head.

That flash and bang will do it. You never trust a dead panel again.
