Showerthought: Is EMT really better than PVC for basement rough-ins or is it just tradition?

I was down in a basement job in St. Paul last week and noticed the old timers ran all EMT conduit while the new guy was pulling PVC in the next room. On one hand EMT looks cleaner and holds up to physical damage way better. On the other hand PVC is cheaper and way faster to install when you're running 30+ feet of boring straight lines. Which side do you lean on for unfinished basements?

Come on, it's conduit, not a life or death thing.

...which is exactly what my uncle said right before we spent four hours digging up his entire front yard because he was convinced there was a major pipe leak. Turned out to be a bad seal on the outdoor faucet. He'd already called the utility company and everything. I was late for my nephew's soccer game that day.
