A homeowner taught me more about grounding than my journeyman did

Last week I was swapping out an old two prong outlet in a house over in Maplewood, and the homeowner kept hovering. Finally he asked if I could show him how the grounding wire actually worked, not just where it goes. I started explaining the code stuff, but he stopped me and said 'so it's basically a path for the lightning to take the stairs instead of jumping through the door.' That stuck with me. I've been doing this for 6 years and I always just tightened the lug and moved on. Now I find myself explaining the 'why' to customers instead of just the 'what', and it makes the whole job feel different. Funny how a guy who can't tell a breaker from a switch can reframe something you do on autopilot. Anyone else had a customer or apprentice say something that made you see basic theory in a new light?

That stair analogy is gold. I had a lady once ask why her bathroom outlets kept tripping, and when I explained the GFCI she said "oh, so it's like a lifeguard who can't swim, he just yells before anyone even falls in." I still think about that every time I test one. It's wild how the real simple way of putting it sticks harder than any code book explanation.
