Why I finally stopped buying fancy study guides after that used bookstore find

Last month I was at Half Price Books in Austin and grabbed a beat-up 2019 AP Bio review book for $4 just for the practice tests. I've been spending $30+ on new guides every year since 2021 and honestly the old one had almost the same content, just dated examples. The thing that convinced me was comparing the practice question styles side by side, the newer ones barely changed the core concepts. Has anyone else found that older editions work just as well for standardized tests, or am I just cheaping out on my students?
