I used to teach myself Spanish with a 1997 textbook I found at a thrift store
Last year I dug out this old "Spanish for Beginners" book from the 90s. First lesson was about asking for directions to a pay phone and how to order a tortilla espanola from a restaurant that probably closed in 2002. I learned more in 3 weeks using a free app and YouTube channels than I did in 6 months with that thing. Has anyone else tried learning from outdated materials and just ended up confused?

Yeah those old textbooks are useless. I tried learning with one from the 80s and the first lesson was about going to the bank to deposit a check before they even had ATMs. Total waste of time. The new apps actually teach you how people talk now.

Totally feel you on that. I had a similar experience trying to learn French from a guidebook from 1995 and ended up asking someone where the nearest telegraph office was.
