Warning: caulk guns with that cheap trigger mechanism are lying to you

I spent 3 hours last Saturday redoing the baseboards in my hallway because I trusted a $6 caulk gun from the hardware store in Wichita. The thing kept dripping and starting and stopping, so I thought I was doing it wrong. Turns out the rod wasn't seating right, and every time I released the trigger it pulled back a tiny bit, leaving these little gaps in the bead. My buddy who does drywall for a living took one look and said "that gun's not worth the metal it's stamped from." He handed me his old ratchet-style one, and the difference is night and day, smooth even flow the whole way. Has anyone else burned a whole afternoon on a cheap gun before realizing the tool was the problem, not your technique?

not worth the metal it's stamped from" hits different when you've spent all day fighting a $6 gun and then your buddy fixes it in like 30 seconds. I once blamed my shaky hands for two hours before realizing the cheap trigger was just messing with me. Now I keep the good one locked up like it's a family heirloom.
