Vent: My kitchen faucet sprayed water everywhere until a sock fixed it

Last Tuesday in Columbus, my kitchen faucet started shooting a weird sideways stream that soaked my counter and my shirt. I tried replacing the aerator, but the new one from Ace Hardware for $6 still leaked. Then my neighbor suggested wrapping a piece of old sock around the hose connection inside the cabinet, and it sealed perfectly. Has anyone else fixed a sprayer leak with something this dumb?

Columbus plumbing code actually requires washers there, not socks.

Wait, is that actually true, or just something someone made up on the internet? But honestly, it kind of fits a pattern I've noticed everywhere: people flip out over tiny details they read somewhere, even when they've never checked the actual rule. It's like with pH levels in pools or the right pressure for tires, everyone's an expert until you ask them to show you the manual. Then it's crickets. Maybe we all just love feeling like we know a secret code, even if it's totally wrong.
