Those $12 magnetic stud finders actually work, I was wrong about them
Last month I hung a shelf in my hallway and the stud finder I borrowed from my neighbor kept beeping on nothing. I finally broke down and bought one of those little magnetic ones that just grab onto the screw. Took me 2 minutes to find the studs, no beeping, no false alarms. The old one said there was a stud right where I drilled into drywall. Has anyone else had better luck with the cheap magnetic kind vs the fancy electronic ones?

Yeah, that's been my experience too! I picked up one of those magnetic ones at the hardware store for like eight bucks after my fancy electronic one kept lying to me. The magnet just finds the drywall screws, plain and simple, no guesswork. I've hung probably twenty shelves and curtain rods with it since and it hasn't missed once. The electronic ones are great until they hit some weird wiring or thick paint and start going nuts.
